You are mostly water. Act like it.

Not a slogan — an anatomical fact. Every organ system you own is built from water and runs on it. In this practice we count water and water alone — not coffee, not tea, not juice. This guide covers how much of you is water, when to drink it so you absorb it instead of flushing your minerals away, the aches and twitches that are really thirst, and what water does system by system when you get the timing right.

01 — YOUR NUMBER

How much do you actually need?

Population guidelines exist — roughly 15.5 cups a day of total water for men and 11.5 for women, food included — but your body size, your training, and your climate move that number a lot. This is a starting estimate, not a prescription.

Food supplies roughly a fifth of your total water — fruit, vegetables, soup and smoothies all count. The figures above are what to drink, spread across the day rather than swallowed in a few large hits.

02 — THE ANATOMY OF WATER

Which parts of you are water.

Whole-body water runs about 60% in adult men and 55% in adult women, closer to 75% in newborns, and it declines with age — which is one reason older bodies dehydrate faster and feel it harder.

03 — TIMING

When to drink, and when not to.

The rhythm that works

  • On waking: 12–16 oz. You just spent seven hours exhaling water without replacing any of it.
  • 30 minutes before meals: a glass here supports digestion and takes the edge off appetite.
  • Small sips with meals: enough to swallow comfortably. There is no good evidence that normal amounts of water impair digestion — only that very large volumes are uncomfortable.
  • Two hours before training: 16–20 oz, so you start topped up rather than chasing.
  • Every 15–20 minutes of hard work: 6–8 oz. Thirst lags behind real need during exercise.
  • After sauna or heat: replace roughly 1.5 times the weight you lost, with minerals — not water alone.
  • Evening: taper 90 minutes before bed so hydration doesn't cost you sleep.

How to drink so you keep your minerals

  • Steady beats bulk. Your kidneys clear roughly 800–1000 ml per hour. Drink faster than that and the excess leaves as urine, taking sodium and potassium with it.
  • Cap single servings near 16 oz and space them at least 30–60 minutes apart.
  • Add minerals when you sweat hard, in heat, in the sauna, or during long sessions: a pinch of quality salt plus potassium-rich food, or an electrolyte mix.
  • Don't chase a number by chugging at 9pm because you're behind. Spread it tomorrow instead.
  • Watch the colour. Pale straw is the target. Clear all day long can mean you're over-diluting.
  • We count water only. Coffee, tea, juice and soda are not part of your number here. Enjoy them if you like — but hydrate with water.
04 — THE STANDARD

Water only. Everything else is a beverage.

This is the standard we hold in this practice, and it is deliberately stricter than the population guidelines.

Why we count water and nothing else

  • Nothing to process. Plain water needs no filtering, no detoxifying, no metabolising. It arrives, it hydrates, it leaves. Every other drink asks your liver and kidneys to sort something out first.
  • Caffeine is a mild diuretic — the effect is smaller than folklore claims, but it is not zero, and it is one more variable between what you drank and what you kept.
  • Tannins and chromogens stain. The pigments in coffee, black tea and red wine bind to the protein film on enamel. That is not imagination — it is why your dentist can tell.
  • Both dry the mouth, and a dry mouth is where bad breath is manufactured. Saliva is your first line of oral defence; anything that reduces it works against you.
  • Acidity matters. Coffee sits around pH 5, most sodas closer to 2.5 — well below the point where enamel begins to soften. Water is neutral.
  • Caffeine has a half-life of five to six hours. An afternoon cup is still measurably in your system at bedtime, and sleep is where your repair happens.
  • Sugar hides in almost all of it — sweetened coffee, bottled tea, juice, sports drinks. Water is the only one with nothing added to argue about.

Being straight with you

  • Coffee and tea do supply fluid — that much the research is clear on, and we won't tell you otherwise.
  • But supplying fluid and being ideal hydration are different questions, and the second is the one this practice cares about.
  • Precision means removing variables. When you count only water, you know exactly what your body received. When you count everything, you are estimating.
  • If you drink coffee, drink it — and drink water too. A glass of water alongside each cup covers the diuretic effect, rinses the pigments off your enamel, and protects your breath.
  • Sparkling and mineral water count as water, as long as nothing sweet is added.
  • Water-rich food counts too — cucumber, melon, citrus, berries, soup, and the smoothies on our recipe page are all water arriving with minerals attached.
05 — THE SIGNALS

Pain that is really thirst.

Dehydration rarely announces itself as thirst first. It shows up as symptoms people treat as unrelated problems — and cramping and twitching are the two we see most often in this practice.

Early — often mistaken for something else

  • Muscle cramping, especially calves and feet at night. Fluid and electrolyte shifts alter how excitable the nerve-muscle junction is.
  • Eyelid or muscle twitching (fasciculations) — low fluid and low magnesium or potassium leave nerves firing at rest.
  • Headache — one of the most common and most reversible triggers.
  • Afternoon fatigue and brain fog — measurable attention and mood declines appear after only mild fluid loss.
  • Dark yellow urine, or going fewer than four times a day.
  • Dry mouth, dry eyes, chapped lips.
  • Constipation — the colon reclaims water; when you're short, stool hardens.
  • Stiff, achy joints and a tender low back — discs and cartilage are water-dependent tissues.

Get help now

  • Dizziness or fainting on standing
  • Racing heart at rest
  • Confusion or unusual sleepiness
  • No urine for 8+ hours, or very dark urine
  • No tears, sunken eyes, or skin that stays tented when pinched
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea that won't stop
  • In infants and elders these progress fast — don't wait it out
  • The opposite emergency: nausea, headache and confusion after drinking very large volumes quickly can mean dangerously diluted sodium. More water is not always the answer.
06 — PRECISION

What water does when you get it right.

Not vague wellness benefits — specific mechanisms, system by system. This is what the fluid is actually doing in there.

Spine, discs and joints

  • Discs rehydrate under low load. Overnight, without gravity compressing them, discs draw fluid back in — you are measurably taller in the morning. Adequate water is what makes that refill possible.
  • Cartilage is a water cushion. Compression squeezes fluid out, release draws it back with nutrients. Movement plus water is how joint surfaces feed themselves.
  • Synovial fluid is water-based. Less fluid means a thinner, less effective lubricant across every joint surface.
  • Fascia glides on water. Hydrated fascia slides; dehydrated fascia grips and refers pain that feels like a muscle problem.

Muscle and nerve

  • Nerve signalling runs on ions in solution. Sodium and potassium moving across membranes is literally how a nerve fires — and that traffic needs water as its medium.
  • Cramping and twitching settle when fluid and mineral balance is restored, usually faster than people expect.
  • Strength and endurance drop measurably with only 2% fluid loss, and perceived effort rises — the workout feels harder before your body tells you why.
  • Recovery accelerates: circulation carries repair materials in and waste out, and that transport is water.

Brain and mood

  • Attention, working memory and mood measurably decline at mild dehydration — the fog is real and it lifts.
  • Headaches often resolve with rehydration alone; it is one of the most reversible triggers there is.
  • The glymphatic system clears metabolic waste from the brain during deep sleep, and it moves that waste in fluid.

Everything else it quietly runs

  • Temperature control: sweat is your only real cooling mechanism, and it costs you water to run.
  • Kidney protection: dilute urine reduces the concentration that lets stones form.
  • Digestion: the colon reclaims water; short supply means hard stool. Adequate water plus fibre is the actual fix.
  • Blood pressure and heart rate: plasma volume depends on fluid — which is why dehydration shows up as dizziness on standing and a faster resting pulse.
  • Skin: turgor, wound healing and barrier function are all fluid-dependent.
  • Lymphatic flow: your immune drainage system is fluid, moved by breathing and muscle contraction.
07 — MINERALS

Water alone is only half the job.

Sodium holds fluid in your bloodstream. Sweat carries roughly 500–1500 mg of it per litre, which is why heavy sweaters who drink only plain water can end up hydrated on paper and cramping in reality. Potassium handles fluid inside the cell and comes from food far better than pills — potatoes, beans, squash, avocado, bananas, leafy greens. Magnesium governs muscle relaxation; low levels show up as cramps, twitches and restless legs, and it's one of the most common shortfalls in modern diets. Calcium is required for the contraction side of the same equation.

A simple rule: water for thirst, minerals for sweat. If you trained hard, sat in the sauna, worked outside in a Dallas August, or you're a heavy salty sweater — add electrolytes rather than more plain water.

08 — WHAT HISTORY GOT RIGHT

Several thousand years of water.

The traditions that hold up

  • Hippocrates (~400 BC) prescribed water temperature deliberately — cold to rouse, warm to relax. Modern contrast therapy is the same idea with better plumbing.
  • Roman baths sequenced hot, warm and cold rooms. That progression survives intact in today's sauna-and-plunge protocols.
  • Vincent Priessnitz (1820s) built modern hydrotherapy from cold-water compresses and wraps.
  • Sebastian Kneipp (1880s) formalised cold water treading and alternating affusions — still practised across Europe, and the direct ancestor of the cold plunge.
  • Ayurvedic practice favoured warm water in small amounts through the day rather than large cold volumes at once — which lines up neatly with what we know about absorption rates.
  • Japanese morning water practice — drinking on waking before eating — matches the overnight deficit precisely.

Claims that outran the evidence

  • "Eight glasses a day" has no clear scientific origin. It's a serviceable reminder, not a rule — your needs vary with size, heat and activity.
  • "Water cures disease" — popularised in the 1990s and never supported. Hydration is necessary for health; it does not replace treatment.
  • "Structured," "hexagonal" or "memory" water — no credible evidence that water holds information or that special structuring survives your stomach.
  • "Alkaline water balances your pH" — your kidneys and lungs control blood pH within a very narrow band regardless of what you drink.
  • "Never drink with meals" — normal amounts don't meaningfully dilute digestion.
  • Honest bottom line: plain, adequate, well-timed water plus minerals covers almost everything the fancy versions promise.
09 — THE DAILY PRACTICE

What we actually recommend.

1. Drink 12–16 oz within 20 minutes of waking — before coffee, before anything. 2. Keep a marked bottle within arm's reach and sip — visible water gets drunk. 3. Take a glass 30 minutes before each meal. 4. Add minerals on any day involving heavy sweat, heat, sauna or long training. 5. Check urine colour at midday and adjust rather than guessing. 6. Stop the volume 90 minutes before bed. 7. If you're cramping or twitching at night, look at magnesium and potassium before you look at anything exotic. 8. Keep a glass of water beside every coffee you drink — it covers the diuretic effect, rinses the staining pigments off your enamel, and protects your breath.

Discs, fascia, cartilage and nerve all depend on fluid to move and repair. If you're doing everything right and still cramping, stiff, or aching, there's usually a mechanical reason underneath — and that's what we find.
