Mid-Back & Ribs
Upper Crossed / Postural Syndrome
Also called: Text neck, desk posture syndrome
A predictable pattern from long hours in flexed positions: tight chest and neck muscles crossed with weakened deep neck flexors and mid-back stabilizers, a forward head, and rounded shoulders. It's not a disease — it's an adaptation. And adaptations reverse with the right inputs.
Common signs
- Neck and upper-back ache that builds through the workday
- Forward head and rounded shoulders visible in photos
- Headaches at day's end
- Tight chest; fatigue between the shoulder blades
- Relief on days away from the desk
Seek help now if
- Arm numbness or weakness (evaluate for nerve involvement)
- Pain that persists and worsens regardless of position
Any of these: call 911 or get to an emergency room first. Everything else can wait.
What to do first
- Audit the environment: screen at eye level, elbows supported, feet grounded, phone raised
- Install movement snacks: 60–90 seconds of chin tucks, wall angels, and thoracic extension every 30–45 minutes
- Get examined to identify which joints have stiffened into the pattern
If it's become chronic
- Lasting change = mobility for the stiff areas + strength for the weak ones + environmental fix — all three, consistently
- Progressive resistance training for the posterior chain is the long-term cure
- Re-photograph posture monthly; visible progress sustains habits
Natural healing options we use
- Chiropractic care for cervicothoracic restriction
- Manual therapy for pecs, scalenes, suboccipitals
- Corrective exercise program (deep neck flexors, lower traps, serratus)
- Breathwork to restore diaphragmatic pattern
About imaging
Not needed unless symptoms suggest nerve involvement or an alternate diagnosis.
Daily self-care
- Movement break timer during desk hours
- Daily band pull-aparts, rows, wall angels
- Raise the phone to eye level — the habit that started much of this
