Neck & Head
Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease & Spondylosis
Also called: Neck arthritis, wear-and-tear changes
Age- and load-related changes in the neck's discs and joints: discs thin, bone spurs form, and segments stiffen. Common on imaging after 40 — and often present without any pain. The diagnosis matters most when the changes match your symptoms and exam.
Common signs
- Chronic neck stiffness, worse in the morning
- Grinding or crunching with movement
- Intermittent flare-ups of aching pain
- Reduced ability to check blind spots when driving
Seek help now if
- New arm numbness, weakness, or gait/balance changes (possible stenosis)
- Night pain that doesn't ease with position change
- History of cancer with new spinal pain
Any of these: call 911 or get to an emergency room first. Everything else can wait.
What to do first
- Understand that imaging findings are common and don't dictate your future — function can improve at any age
- An exam distinguishes which findings are actually generating symptoms
- Motion is the treatment: stiff degenerative segments respond to consistent, appropriate movement
If it's become chronic
- A long-term plan emphasizes mobility maintenance, strength, and flare-up management rather than a cure mindset
- Monitor for radicular or cord-related symptoms over time; those change the plan
- Bone and joint nutrition (vitamin D, K2, adequate protein, collagen) supports the tissue you're keeping
Natural healing options we use
- Chiropractic mobilization/adjusting to preserve segmental motion
- Manual therapy for chronically guarded muscles
- PEMF for joint-level support
- Strength training scaled to your level — the best long-term protector
- Anti-inflammatory nutrition pattern
About imaging
X-rays document alignment and degenerative severity. MRI only when nerve or cord symptoms appear or the clinical picture changes.
Daily self-care
- Daily mobility routine (rotation, retraction, extension as tolerated)
- Strength training 2–3× weekly
- Manage desk ergonomics and phone habits ruthlessly
