Fibromyalgia
Also called: Central sensitization syndrome
A condition of amplified pain processing — the nervous system's volume knob turned up — producing widespread pain, deep fatigue, unrefreshing sleep, and brain fog. It is real, physiological, and manageable: the strongest treatments retrain the nervous system through graded movement, sleep repair, and stress-system regulation.
Common signs
- Widespread pain (both sides, above and below the waist) for 3+ months
- Profound fatigue and waking unrefreshed
- Brain fog ('fibro fog'), memory and focus complaints
- Sensitivity: touch, sound, light, temperature all 'louder'
- Often traveling companions: IBS, headaches, TMJ, anxiety
Seek help now if
- Fibromyalgia doesn't cause: joint swelling, fevers, weight loss, or progressive weakness — those findings mean the workup isn't finished
- New widespread pain after 50 with stiffness (screen polymyalgia rheumatica)
- Any focal neurological deficit
Any of these: call 911 or get to an emergency room first. Everything else can wait.
What to do first
- Get properly diagnosed — which includes excluding mimics (thyroid, vitamin D deficiency, inflammatory disease, sleep apnea)
- Start where the evidence is strongest: graded, gentle, consistent movement — begin below what you think you can do
- Anchor sleep: fixed wake time, wind-down routine, sleep environment overhaul
If it's become chronic
- Build the pillars in order: sleep → gentle daily movement → stress-system downregulation (breathwork, vagal work) → strength — progressing each patiently
- Flare planning beats flare reacting: know your triggers (sleep debt, overexertion cycles, stress surges) and your reset protocol
- Care teams help: this condition responds to consistent multi-angle support, not single silver bullets
Natural healing options we use
- Graded exercise programming with flare-aware progression
- Gentle chiropractic and manual therapy dosed to tolerance
- Breathwork and nervous-system regulation training
- Magnesium, vitamin D optimization, omega-3s; anti-inflammatory eating pattern
- Sleep hygiene architecture
About imaging
Normal by definition — used to exclude other causes, not to confirm this one.
Daily self-care
- A daily movement floor, however small, never zero
- Pace by plan, not by good-day euphoria (the boom-bust trap)
- Track sleep, movement, and flares — patterns are power
