Peripheral Neuropathy
Also called: Nerve damage in feet/hands
Malfunction of the long nerves, typically starting in the feet — numbness, burning, tingling in a 'stocking' pattern creeping upward. Diabetes leads the cause list, but the list is long (B12 deficiency, alcohol, thyroid, medications, and more) and partially reversible causes are common enough that every neuropathy deserves a real workup, not a shrug.
Common signs
- Numbness, burning, tingling, or 'walking on cushions' starting in both feet
- Symptoms worse at night
- Balance trouble, especially in the dark (feet reporting less)
- Later: hands joining in; feet injuries going unnoticed
Seek help now if
- Rapidly progressive weakness or ascending numbness over days–weeks — urgent neurological evaluation
- One-sided or patchy patterns (different diagnosis territory)
- Foot wounds that won't heal in numb feet — same-week wound care
- Bowel/bladder involvement
Any of these: call 911 or get to an emergency room first. Everything else can wait.
What to do first
- Get the cause hunt done: blood sugar (including post-meal patterns), B12 with its cofactors, thyroid, kidney function, alcohol history, medication review — findable causes are treatable causes
- Start protecting the feet today if numb: daily visual checks, no barefoot walking, well-fitted shoes
- Begin balance training early — falls are neuropathy's most preventable harm
If it's become chronic
- Treat the treatable relentlessly: glucose control measurably slows diabetic neuropathy; B12 repletion can reverse its deficiency picture
- Symptom and function program: balance work, strength maintenance, gait support, skin surveillance
- Track: monofilament sensation, balance times, symptom territory — objective markers beat impressions
Natural healing options we use
- Balance and strength programming (the fall-prevention core)
- Blood-sugar-focused nutrition; alpha-lipoic acid and B-vitamin support where appropriate to the cause
- Attended e-stim for symptom modulation; PEMF
- Foot care routine and footwear strategy
- Circulation-promoting daily movement
About imaging
Diagnosis runs on labs and electrodiagnostics more than imaging; testing is cause-directed.
Daily self-care
- Daily foot inspection as ritual (mirror for soles)
- Night lights everywhere — vision substitutes for foot sensation
- Balance practice daily; report territory changes
